Perez Reviews: The Glass Menagerie - On Broadway!

menagerie
The new revival of The Glass Menagerie on Broadway is worth seeing, purely for the performance of Cherry Jones.
Best known to TV audiences from her work on 24, the actress really shines on stage and commands the audience’s attention at the Booth Theater – whenever she speaks or is just standing there. In fact, her presence is so powerful that it lingers when she’s off stage too!
It is truly a Tony-worthy performance!
Menagerie is not one of our favorite plays from Tennessee Williams. It relies far too much on narration and not that much action happens in Act 1.
John Tiffany does a fine job directing, but Bob Crowley‘s scenic design – or lack thereof – left much to be desired.
As far as the other performers, Celia Keenan-Bolger was solid. Brian J. Smith was barely in the show. And, Zachary Quinto, while good, unfortunately attempted a very specific Southern accent that he just couldn’t pull off and that had mostly disappeared by the end of Act 2.
Jones, however, is a Tennessee native and radiates not just authenticity but also brilliance in this production. See it for her! She is giving us some Meryl!!!
