Pete Doherty, former Libertines member, who is currently promoting his new movie Confession Of A Child Of The Century, is struggling with drug addiction.
His struggle has been an on and off battle for years and years now.
So how did he cope while on this new film? How did he hide his addiction from the director?
“I couldn’t hide it from her. She didn’t really care. It was just a question of how quickly I can find a vein and then let’s get on with it. It’s poison but it’s also medicine. When you’re in that state, you can’t function unless you have your fix.”
That’s so terrible! So, is he clean now at least?
“I am struggling, to be honest.”
So sad! His life has been a whirlwind of misfortunes, like the time he spent in prison last year. When asked about jail, he said:
“It’s horrible, horrible. There are lots of aggressive, money-oriented, very masculine people, but at the same time, there is really nasty homoerotic violence. It’s not the place to be if you are a freethinking man.”
He was asked how the prison guards felt, seeing him in jail. He said:
“They enjoyed it, seeing me vulnerable. I was getting a lot of mail from kids saying: Pete, I love your songs. I love your poetry. They were having to sit and read this. It was winding them up because they had this idea I was this scumbag drug addict and I am getting these letters saying what a talented songwriter I am. They didn’t like it. So they put me in with the nastiest, most horrible bloke you could imagine. But it turned out he was a big music fan and he didn’t like bullies.”
Wow! A little ray of light in his otherwise dark life. Seems like his cellmate may have been like a guardian angel to him.
He’s currently working on a new album so hopefully he can focus on his music and maybe step away from all the drug use.
Maybe rehab is the next step.
All we can do is hope he gets the help he needs.
