Mimi O’Donnell is finally ready to speak out on the death of her life partner, Philip Seymour Hoffman.
On May 13, the strong theater director opened up about the loss of Philip and how she managed to find solace after his passing.
The 47-year-old revealed:
“I was pretty stubborn in my falling apart. And my kids saw all of it, because they should. What, am I going to hide it from them? I don’t want them to hide it from me. And, even as the artistic director, there were times when I was like, ├óΓé¼╦£I can’t do this right now, and I’m not going to pretend I can.'”
Wow, we’re quite impressed by O’Donnell’s ability to be so vulnerable with her grief. Considering Hoffman died in such a tragic way, we can only imagine the pain she experienced was ten times worse.
The artist added that her work on Sydney Theater Company‘s production of The Maids last summer helped her recover:
“That was the first play that I saw after Phil had died, and she did that thing you want every actress in theater to do: she left her heart on the stage. And I knew enough in that moment to go: ├óΓé¼╦£I love theater. I love it. I love what it can do.’ And, not making a concrete decision, but knowing that I wasn’t going to leave the theater company, I wasn’t going to stop doing this.”
We’re glad Mimi’s passion and commitment to the arts was a source of comfort.
These days Hoffman’s long time love is throwing herself into work again, this time at The Labyrinth Theater Company, where the pair first met.
O’Donnell divulged:
“I go in feeling whatever I’m feeling about grief, and all of a sudden there’s something onstage that’s happening├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥it cracks something open. When they really, truly open up in front of you emotionally, there’s something about it that I find humbling as a human being.”
Totally makes sense — art is so healing!!!
