Others nearby filmed the aftermath of the jaw-dropping collision:
@daviderea1 Breaking news! Queens, New York/LaGuardia airport space report a collision on runway four between a aircraft and a fire truck. Police have been transmitted second alarm for a box 37 at the airport. Details are still emerging. #laguardiaairport #lga #nyqueens #crashreport
The airport is currently shut down with no planes coming or going. It’s expected to be closed at least until 2 p.m. EST on Monday. Thankfully, some passengers on the flight were able to be reunited with family at the carrier’s ticket counter.
As for how this happened, authorities revealed the Port Authority fire truck was responding to a separate incident on a United Airlines flight that was experiencing a bad “odor” on board, which was causing flight attendants in the back of the plane to start to “feel ill.” They needed to head back to a gate.
In audio from the control tower released by LiveATC, “Truck 1” is heard requesting permission to cross the runway, and an air traffic controller lets them through. Just moments later, however, a controller shouts:
“Truck one, stop, stop, stop!”
The warnings repeat like that until a controller says:
“Jazz 646, I see you collided with a vehicle.”
After reports of the runway closing, a person says of the horrifying collision:
“That wasn’t good to watch.”
Another responds:
“Yeah, I know I was here. I tried to reach out … We were dealing with an emergency earlier. I messed up.”
Oof.
The other replies:
“Nah, man, you did the best you could.”
