We felt so bad for Prince Harry when he didn’t make it in time to see Queen Elizabeth right before she died. It was even worse because their relationship seemed to sour before that — meaning there wasn’t closure for their rift.
Apparently, while growing apart may have been a gradual process, there was a beginning, the source of the break. And one royal expert thinks she knows what that moment was.
According to a new report from royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith, the longtime monarch felt left out when it came to Harry’s wedding plans with Meghan Markle back in 2018.
In a new post published on her Substack account on Sunday, the author told readers that Harry was rude to the Queen for ten minutes during a February 2018 meeting about the wedding. That reportedly fractured the duo’s relationship and made the Queen — who passed away in 2022 at the age of 96 — worried for the groom-to-be. Yikes!

No, it wasn’t about the tiara (though that may have been part of the fallout). According to Smith, the Queen was originally dismayed that the Suits actress would not reveal the details about the wedding dress that she’d be wearing during the ceremony.
And then the Queen reportedly got ticked off again that Harry had asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the wedding service in St. George’s Chapel — without first asking for permission from the Dean of Windsor to make that request.
And then the Queen purportedly got bothered by what Smith claims was Meghan not working well with either Prince William or Princess Catherine leading up to the big day.
Strike one, strike two, strike three!
Thus, that all led to February 2018, when the Queen and the Spare author reportedly got together for a conversation to address all those issues. It was supposedly during said conversation that Harry was rude to the Queen in a move that began the fracture of what had previously been a solid connection! Hmm…
So, that account apparently comes from Lady Elizabeth Anson — Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, who died in 2020. Smith is publishing those details now after recalling a conversation she apparently had with the woman back in 2019, about a year before Lady Anson’s death.
Per Smith, Lady Anson even had a conspiratorial mind as far as how Meghan got linked up with her then-husband-to-be! The royal biographer recalled Lady Anson saying the “jury was still out” on whether she liked Markle. Oh, and Lady Anson also reportedly said this about Markle way back then:
“We hope but don’t quite think she is in love. We think she engineered it all.”
Yikes!!!
FWIW, Smith reports that Harry and his grandmother did patch things up just a couple months after that difficult conversation. But… we did all see the signs that nothing was ever the same. Right??
So we can’t help but wonder whether there were long-term ramifications of that tough 10-minute meeting that led all the way through “Megxit” and far, far beyond.
Thoughts, y’all??? Share ’em (below)!
