Prince Harry was cozying up to a journalist back in the day! And there are texts to prove it!
In October 2022, the Duke of Sussex sued Associated Newspapers for allegedly using phone hacking, wiretapping, and other illicit practices to get information and invade his privacy between 1993 and 2011. Harry argued the Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday could not have obtained any of the material they published legally. However, Associated Newspapers denied the allegations. The publishing company insisted they had sources within his friend group, including the former deputy diary editor and now editor at large at Mail on Sunday, Charlotte Griffiths.

Harry claimed he did not know she was a journalist, but she shut that down. She wrote in a witness statement:
“We were all the same age and going to the same places in London at night so knew each other socially for a time. My friends — including the group that introduced me to Prince Harry — knew that I was a journalist and had gone to work for Katie Nicholl at the Mail on Sunday.”
Now, Facebook messages between Harry and Charlotte surfaced on Tuesday during the closing hearing in the lawsuit, showing just how close they once were over a decade ago! According to Newsweek, the pair texted back and forth between December 2011 and January 2012 — and they got sooo flirty! Harry wrote in one message on December 4, 2011:
“It’s H,incase u were confused by name and picture!!! X.”
To which Charlotte replied:
“Hello Mr Mischief… Did you get home OK slash did you actually find your car and did you beat Arthur down the motorway more importantly?! What a fun weekend of naughtiness — can’t we all get up to no good in the countryside every weeked damn it?? Smooches, CG String. Xxx.”
Harry said it was “without doubt the best of those weekends I’ve been to,” adding:
“What a crowd. Never laughed so much in 24hrs!! Mr mischief? How do I get that title…l was surely no worse than anyone else!! Serious withdraw symptoms still.”
The prince went on to say he had to “make polite conversation with strange people at a dinner last night, begging them for money for charity,” which he didn’t find “really fun.” He continued:
“Hope work isn’t too dull wherever u are?!”
Per The Telegraph, Charlotte then talked about wanting to reunite and mentioned banter “on the group email front.” They didn’t message each other until a month later, on January 22, 2012. Calling Harry “H bomb,” the journalist wrote:
“We missed you so much at Arthur’s last week.”
Harry proceeded to get super flirty with Charlotte, expressing how much he missed their “movie snuggles.” Oh! He said:
“I WISH I was there sugar but unfortunately stuck in Cornwall doing Army stuff 🙁 Otherwise I would have been there playing and then drinking u under the table, obvi!! Just wish I could have been there…especially now that you’re there! Dou ever work?!!…. Hope you’re really well Griff…Miss our movie snuggles!! I’m off comms all week incase u think I’m being rude, keep me posted xxx xxx xxx.”
For further context, the messages between Harry and Charlotte took place after his relationship with Chelsy Davy and before his romance with Cressida Bonas. He dated Chelsy between 2004 and April 2011. Months later, he began dating Cressida from May 2012 to April 2014. And we all know he met his now-wife, Meghan Markle, two years later. So, there’s no overlap here with the flirtatious texts and relationships! Nothing scandalous in that nature!
What is the big deal then? These texts could cost Harry his case because they do prove Charlotte was a friend (or maybe more??) at one point in his life, and he may have even known her job. Of course, it’s the judge who will ultimately decide the outcome here. The trial between Harry and Associated Newspapers concluded on Tuesday, and the judge has not announced a verdict. It may take weeks or even months before a decision is made, per Newsweek.
