It turns out Prince William and Princess Catherine were romantically linked long before nearly anybody ever knew!
If you’re a longtime follower of the love story between King Charles‘ eldest son and heir apparent and his bride Kate Middleton, you know the duo had their first date at a 2002 fashion show while the pair were students at the University of St. Andrews. But, uhhh, it actually turns out that’s WRONG! The pair went on a charity auction date together before the fashion show outing that changed both of their lives forever!
According to a long-ago college pal of the pair named Laura Warshauer, the duo’s first date actually came before the fashion show! She told DailyMail.com it was when Kate went up for auction at a charity function and William donated £200 just to go out with her! And even more incredible than that? The event was Harry Potter-themed complete with a Hogwarts-like castle hosting the party!
Nostalgia alert!
Warshauer explained:
“We went to a party at a castle. It was a Harry Potter theme, and they did an auction for charity where people were bidding to win a date.”
Then, when Kate got up on stage to be put up for auction, Will stepped right up with cold, hard cash to seal the deal:
“Will bid £200 to win a date with Kate.”
From there, the rest is history! While Warshauer admitted to the outlet her memory of the charity auction — and the couple’s subsequent date — has softened into a bit of a haze over the last two decades, she was adamant the couple-to-be had “instant chemistry” as soon as they first locked onto each other’s radar.
Love it!
Pretty impressive, too, that Wills only had to fork over £200 to get with the future Queen of England! Viewed from that perspective, quite a BARGAIN!!! LOLz!

We’re still floored that this charity auction connection apparently preempts the infamous fashion show first date story, tho. That’s such an iconic moment, with Kate walking into the show rocking a sheer dress above a black bikini, and Will becoming immediately smitten over it. But this is a fun and heartwarming story, too! Just VERY unexpected!
