This is brutal! Rory McIlroy reportedly never even told his wife Erica Stoll he was divorcing her — he just hired a private investigator to drop the legal filing in her hands!
According to court documents obtained by the Irish newspaper The Belfast Telegraph on Sunday, the professional golfer’s wife was served divorce papers while at the family home in the members-only development, The Bear’s Club, in Jupiter, Florida on May 13 — less than 24 hours after her husband won the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. But the thing is… she didn’t know in advance he was even planning on divorcing her! Oh no!
Per the paperwork, Erica was served the divorce docs by Carl Woods, a former Palm Beach police officer who now runs CW Services & Associates, a private practice that serves legal docs all over the country. He showed up at the family home unannounced at around 10:30 a.m. and handed her the papers! Sounds like she had no idea this was coming! Jeez!

In the summons, Carl described Erica as a thin white woman with blonde hair around 5-foot-7 in height, in her 30s, and noted she was not wearing glasses. The athlete had signed the divorce documents digitally on May 9 (the first day of the aforementioned golf competition). He filed the papers in Palm Beach County Court with help from his attorney Thomas Sasser, who also represented Tiger Woods in his messy 2010 divorce.
According to the legal papers, Erica was given 20 days from the moment she was served to file a written response to the petition with the circuit court clerk, the summons declared:
“A phone call will not protect you. Your written response, including the case number given above and the names of the parties, must be filed if you want the court to hear your side of the case. If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case, and your wages, money and property may thereafter be taken without further warning from the court. There are other legal requirements. You may want to call an attorney right away. If you do not know an attorney, you may call an attorney referral service or a legal aid office (listed in the phone book.)”
As of May 26, per the outlet, Stoll had not responded. Hmm…
The couple signed a prenuptial agreement before their wedding, which Rory asked to be upheld. He also requested shared custody of their 3-year-old daughter Poppy. The PGA champion hasn’t addressed the split publicly, but his team has insisted he wants this breakup to be “as respectful and amicable as possible.”
Reports have since surfaced expressing how hard it was for Erica to be married to Rory — going so far as to suggest he had ample opportunity to cheat while on the road alone if he wanted to! And now he’s sparked dating rumors with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis while on the PGA Tour, per reports. So not a great look. But worse is the way he served these papers!
If you don’t know, before Erica came along, Rory was linked to Caroline Wozniacki. He apparently ended their engagement in a three-minute phone call months before the wedding, only to go public with his current wife shortly after. Just when you thought he couldn’t stoop any lower, he found a way! If he truly didn’t tell Erica he was going to be filing for divorce before she got served, that’s so rough!
