Welcome to the world, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor!
As we reported, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry debuted their baby boy to the Queen — and the realm of social media — on Wednesday, revealing that they gave their first child a relatively unusual name.
Considering the rumors that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were planning on giving their newborn a “strong” name that had ties to both U.K. and U.S. history, most royal commentators and historians were placing their bets on more traditional names like Alexander, Albert, or James.
But Meg and Harry pulled a fast one on the world and named their firstborn after a hot CW character.
LOLz… jk! (Not about Archie Andrews being hot; about the royal couple naming their son specifically after him. [Then again, who knows? We don’t know they don’t watch Riverdale after a long day of royal-ing.])
Anyway, the reaction to Archie-kins’ name was fierce on Twitter. But before we get to that, let’s unpack this wild moniker.

According to nameberry.com, Archie is a name of German origin meaning “truly brave” and is quite popular in the U.K.. It might also have a special meaning in the royal family…
Interestingly enough, a woman told The Sun back in January that she saw Harry and Meg’s nephew Prince George out playing with his sister Princess Charlotte and their grandmother Carole Middleton. The woman claimed that George started petting her dog, so she asked the 5-year-old what his name was. She recalled:
“To my astonishment, he said, ‘I’m called Archie.'”
Huh. Maybe Archie isn’t that unusual for the royal fam after all? Or was little Georgie just giving us a big clue?
Archie’s middle name, Harrison, has a very literal meaning: nameberry.com writes that Harrison is a “boy’s name of English, Aboriginal origin meaning ‘son of Harry.'” No explanation needed there.

As for Mountbatten-Windsor, this has been the last name of the queen’s male-line descendants who do not have royal styles and titles, and is a combination of her surname and husband Prince Philip’s adopted surname of Mountbatten.
The couple has not confirmed whether Archie is a formal name or a nickname of Archibald. It has, however, been reported that Meghan and Harry have chosen to opt out of giving Archie a courtesy title: while the newborn could have been known as the Earl of Dumbarton, his title will instead be “Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.”
Sounds just as fancy to us!
Most of social media, meanwhile, is still having trouble getting past “Archie.” See some reactions to the royal baby’s name reveal (below)!

Of course, plenty made connections to the Archie comics character — including Riverdale show-runner, Roberto Aguirre Sacasa:

Others drew comparisons to the character from BBC children’s series Balamory, who many argued was the first royal Archie because he lived in a pink castle:
