Ryan Murphy‘s shows can fall anywhere on the TV spectrum — giving viewers anything from compelling character studies to over-stuffed hot messes. And it’s all ratings gold!
But the American Horror Story mastermind wants viewers to know that his newest FX drama, Feud: Bette and Joan, will be anything but a “quote-unquote camp-fest.”
The producer’s latest anthology series centers around the legendary feud between silver screen legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, played respectively by Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange.

While the upcoming premiere already has viewers excited for more infamous feuds to come in future seasons, Murphy said he has no plans to explore another Hollywood-centric female feud!
Speaking at the show’s panel at the 2017 Winter TCA Press Tour, he explained:
“I think if we’re gonna do feuds, we can’t just do Hollywood stories. I think we could do something from the 16th century. I think the scope of the show can go back in time in history and it doesn’t have to be modern. I would never do another Hollywood woman vs. woman story, although people really want the Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. I get a lot of requests, but I’m not going to.”
Noooooo!!! We need this Bad Blood to be chronicled — preferably in an FX mini-series format!
Though we’re sure TayTay wouldn’t want another feud of hers exposed after last year’s Famous incident…

As for Feud: Bette and Joan, Murphy fans might assume the premise will result in the two actresses engaging in catty dialogue, diva wine throwing, and theatrical one-upwomanship — but the creator insists that there’s much more to it than that! He continued:
“I wasn’t interested in doing anything campy or quote-unquote camp-fest├óΓé¼┬ª For me, what I love about the show, even though it’s set in 1962, the themes and issues are so modern. We really wanted to lean into that aspect of the show├óΓé¼┬ªWe just wanted to take it away from what people would expect and make it a little more emotional.”
Since Hollywood’s treatment to women of a certain age continues to be such a relevant conversation, seeing this tale through a modern day lens could be just as eye opening as American Crime Story!
Feud: Bette and Joan features an all star supporting cast that includes Catherine Zeta Jones, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Stanley Tucci, and Kiernan Shipka — catch the premiere Sunday, March 5 at 10 p.m. on FX!
