Selena Gomez Gets SO Real Discussing Fan Chatter About Her Weight -- And It Makes Us Want To Give Her A Big Hug

After hearing Selena Gomez‘s latest comments about her weight and the relentless (and ruthless) fan commentary surrounding it, we just want to give her a big ol’ hug. And you will, too — if you have even the smallest shred of empathy, we hope.

So, on Monday, Selena and her beloved fiancé Benny Blanco were the special guests on influencer Jay Shetty‘s powerful On Purpose podcast.

As you may recall, Shetty is no stranger to having A-list celebs on the show to chat. And when those high-profile Hollywood stars step up to the mic, they often get VERY real about their lives. Well, this brand-new episode featuring Selly G is no different.

When Shetty queried Selena about whether she pays attention to all the online chatter about her life (and goodness knows there is a LOT of it out there) she admitted:

“I fall victims to looking at things. It doesn’t add anything to your life. It’s just so difficult from the choices, the people you date. It’s like nobody cares about that stuff with men.”

The 32-year-old wasn’t talking about the ongoing Justin BieberHailey Baldwin issue with that remark, either! (Er, at least she wasn’t explicitly referencing that spat…)

When pressed by Shetty, the Wizards of Waverly Place alum revealed that she carries a lot of self-consciousness specifically regarding her weight, and how it’s constantly commented upon online:

“I think we just carry a lot. My weight’s a big one, too. Everybody just has something to say and it’s really making me sad. Not even sad — no, I’m not a victim — but I think it’s made me a tad bitter. And I feel really guilty for saying that. But it’s true.”

Ugh…

Of course, it should be no surprise to anyone that Selena has battled lupus for years now. And that issue has had a major effect on the overall health challenges faced by the Only Murders In The Building star — including her fluctuating weight. But as she reflected on the podcast, knowing all that still hasn’t stopped fans from cruelly chattering.

At times, the online conversations have gotten so destructive that it has made Gomez want to shrink away from any extra public scrutiny, too. Even during what should be career-defining and life-changing events:

“This isn’t news to anybody that women have a lot more intense feelings from their appearance, to what they are wearing, to everything. When I get prepared for an event, 90 percent of the time I’m saying, ‘I just hope I can take the picture and sit down.'”

Oof. Her weight isn’t the only thing that the Hands To Myself singer feels judged over, either. Unfortunately, she reflected on just how cruel fans can be across the board — and how that cruelty can seize upon every single insecurity:

“It’s the character that gets judged. It’s the way I’m not white enough. I’m not Mexican enough. There’s just so many different things that come up in my face that I just can’t help but see. I fall victim to looking at things. It doesn’t add anything to your life.”

That’s honestly so brutal. But at least she’s figured out one way to (mostly) avoid the commentary: by logging off!

Selena noted:

“I’m just happier that I don’t have that. I had to stop after a while. And I still take breaks because I’m human and sometimes I read things. But I do most of the time ignore everything. I don’t have anything on my phone at that moment. So, there are ways to combat it.”

Amen!

Oh, and there’s one more solution for the songstress here, too: basking in the incredible warmth of her beau Benny’s endless love! Reflecting on how much support she’s gotten from her fiancé, Gomez gabbed:

“He’s the one person, you know when you’re saying those nice things to me babe, I believe him. To where I’m not going to believe someone who is blowing smoke up my butt to just make me feel good. He’s saying it because he believes it, and that makes me feel good.”

We LOVE that part of it! So much!!

The rest, though? Ugh. Girl. You deserve such a big hug!

Sending love and light!! What about U, Perezcious readers??
