Selena Gomez Retiring From Music For Good?!

Are we about to witness the end of Selena Gomez’s popstar era?!

During the latest episode of the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, the actress/singer/beauty mogul spoke candidly about her booming career… And teased how she may be ready to simplify it!

While speaking with the hilarious hosts, the 31-year-old shared that while her musical career has been a fun ride from waaay back when she was on Disney Channel, it may be something she’s outgrowing. The Single Soon songstress dished:

“I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun. But I was doing my TV show [Wizards of Waverly Place] at the same time and I just found it really fun so I just kept going but the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, I would like to find something to just settle on.”

Oh! So singing was more of a fun phase that lingered on?! Got it! And unfortunately, it turned out to be something that contributed to a battle with her mental health… She recalled:

“I went to a mental institute and canceled one of my tours. It just got to me because I love working and it distracts me from bad things.”

We all know that between Rare Beauty, her philanthropy, her acting career, and now her new BF Benny Blanco, her time is pretty tied up. Seems like she’s going to focus on the acting over the music from now on! But don’t panic just yet — she says she still has enough gas in the tank for one final album before she makes the permanent move to the silver screen. She explained:

“I do feel like I have one more album in me but I would probably choose acting.”

The hosts reminded her that she doesn’t necessarily have to pick just one career, but to that, the Only Murders in the Building star responded:

“You’re right, but I am going to want to chill because I’m tired.”

As for how she even got her start in singing, Selena credited (or blamed?) Disney, who’s known for producing multi-faceted stars:

“Disney is, it’s safe to say, a machine and, in a way, forcefully require that I know how to sing so I could sing the theme song [of a show]. They know how to package someone and make it a whole triple threat thing.”

“Forcefully require.” Yea, wow, she really seems to be confirming she never wanted to become a pop star. She continued:

“I wanted to be an actress, I never really intended on being a singer full-time but apparently that hobby turned into something else. I don’t think I’m the best singer but I do know how to tell stories and I love being able to make songs.”

It sounds like her heart was just never really in the pop game to begin with! But we can count on her gracing our screens for years to come!
