Shawn Mendes is tackling the gay rumors… With music!
Speculation surrounding the Stitches singer’s sexuality has followed him for YEARS — and it kinda sounds like he’s over it! His new message to fans? Think what you want to think! That’s at least what he sings about in an unreleased new song!

The 26-year-old is currently on his For Friends and Family Tour and has been trickling in unreleased tracks from his forthcoming album Shawn, which drops on November 15. But one song in particular titled The Mountain is capturing fans’ attention because of a not-so-subtle lyric! In footage shared by a fan on TikTok over the weekend, the Señorita vocalist can be heard singing about the rumors surrounding his sexuality:
“Some days, I have a change of heart / You can say what you need to say / You can say I’m too young / You can say I’m too old / You can say I like girls or boys / Whatever fits your mold”

Okay, Shawn! “Whatever fits your mold”? We like it! Because at the end of the day it shouldn’t matter whether he’s gay or straight! But that’s not to say he hasn’t attempted to clear up rumors in the past…
The Mercy singer opened about his battle with the public’s perception of his sexuality in 2018, telling told Rolling Stone:
“In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay. Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me … I thought, ‘You f**king guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out.’ That’s something that kills people. That’s how sensitive it is. Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I’m gay?”
Shawn, of course, dated Camila Cabello for years and was subsequently linked to Sabrina Carpenter — though denied any romance between them. He also addressed the way the rumors affected his mental health while chatting with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast in 2020. He dished at the time:
“It was so, so frustrating for me because there were some people in my life that I was very very close to, who were gay and in the closet. And I felt like this real anger for those people. It’s such a tricky thing. You want to say, ‘I’m not gay but it’d be fine if I was gay—but also there’s nothing wrong with being gay but I’m not.’ You don’t really know how to respond to the situation.”
