Taylor Swift Drops Haunting NEW Song 'Beautiful Ghosts' From 'CATS'!

Taylor Swift Cats Song Beautiful Ghosts

Taylor Swift‘s back catalog may be in dispute at the moment — but to a cat the only “big machine” that matters is the vacuum cleaner! Ha!

For her role in the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of the Broadway classic Cats, Taylor not only put on her cat ears — she also put on her songwriter hat!

In collaboration with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber she created a brand new song just for the film (*cough*eligible for Oscar consideration*cough cough* — sorry, must have had a hairball!).

As Webber explains in a featurette teasing the new track back in October:

“When I read the screenplay, the first thing I said was, ‘We have to have a song for Victoria,’ the song is now an incredibly important and central part of the whole film.”

Ooh, exciting! But wait, isn’t Taylor playing Bombalurina??

Yep, in the film, that song will be sung by Francesca Hayward‘s character, Victoria, and later reprised by Old Deuteronomy, aka Dame Judi Dench herself (this cast, me-WOW, are we right?!). However, the Taylor version you’re about to hear will also play over the end credits.

Ch-ch-check out the haunting longing of Beautiful Ghosts (below)!

Wow. Breathtaking.

As director Tom Hooper says in the featurette:

“What I couldn’t believe was the extraordinary beauty of these lyrics that Taylor had written. It was as if someone had come into the film I was in the middle of making and read the script, met the actors, seen the world and reflected back to me a profound understanding of what we are trying to do with the movie. It was utterly thrilling.”

Awww!

Taylor explains her inspiration behind the lyrics she wrote, saying:

“T.S. Eliot is such a specific type of writer and uses such specific language and imagery, and so reading through his work and everything I just really wanted to reflect that. You can’t write a modern lyric for Cats.”

She added:

“If you can’t get T.S. Eliot, get T.S.”

For more on the writing process, see the whole featurette (below)!

At least Taylor knows this song won’t ever get into the hands of Scooter Braun.

For those who haven’t been following the controversy, Justin Bieber‘s manager bought up the rights to all of Taylor’s old songs. In response she decided to re-record them; however, she was given a specific window in which to do so. Now Braun and Big Machine are telling her she can’t do a medley of her old songs at the American Music Awards because that would technically be recorded by all the cameras. Oof.

It’s a whole thing, and you can get caught up on all the latest HERE!
