Amber Portwood is opening up about how hard ex-fiancé Gary Wayt’s disappearance was for her.
If you don’t know, the reality star’s then-partner disappeared after they had an argument in a North Carolina rental property back in June. He went totally MIA for days — until he was eventually found safe. The whole thing was understandably really upsetting for the MTV personality. Especially since people were accusing her of murdering Gary!

In Thursday’s episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, cameras rolled amid the scandal, and Amber emotionally addressed all the rumors that were circulating online.
First off, Amber explained that they’d been arguing over his family not being able to accept her based on her past legal drama, which she claims Gary’s father must have found after looking up her Wikipedia page. The revelation cast doubts about a potential marriage, which they eventually called off. And that’s when she claimed Gary disappeared! She explained:
“I think he was holding in the fact that maybe he heard from his family or something and not telling me. I was just saying, ‘I can’t do this. Like, no. How can we get married then if you’re family can’t accept me and stuff?’ And maybe he took that as me breaking up with him. It seemed like to me like he was upset and maybe, like, hopeless.”
Thankfully, right after saying all this, she discovered that he was found safe. A big relief!
Later in the episode, she was seen on the way to a psychiatry appointment to help deal with her “trauma response” following the dramatic situation. Noting that she was “in such a weird space” after the ordeal, she reflected:
“I’ve had to deal with thinking my fiancé was dead for three to four days. … I had to deal with literally grieving and trying to make sense of why the f**k would somebody do this to me. … I am going through something right now.”
The 16 & Pregnant alum, who was previously diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder, then sobbed as she acknowledged how much that has impacted her mental health:
“This man broke me. I was stable. Right now, this is the first time in years in my life — I am 34 — I am not f**king right because a man put a ring on my finger. You broke me because we were actually in love.”
She continued:
“The day that man left for no reason — I’m going to say no reason because there was no f**king reason — he ruined something so f**king good.”
The TV personality then acknowledged all the conspiracy theories that took off amid the search for Gary, in which many people accused her of killing him! Reacting to the horrifying claims, she said:
“Why am I getting persecuted? Every single media outlet lied about what the f**k I did and catastrophized what I did. ‘We know Amber killed him.’ I had to deal with that. Listen to me, do you know how that feels when people are calling you a murderer to your f**king fiancé?”
Sobbing, she added:
“He doesn’t know what he did. They were calling me a murderer. They said I f**king killed him.”
Oof. It is such a disturbing and unsettling allegation to deal with!
Once at her appointment, Amber got candid about how hurt she was following the messy situation, too. She shared:
“If you want to show what heartbreak is, this is it. … It’s not just about a man. He looked at my family, my daughter and just asked to be a big, happy family.”
Such a heartbreaking situation!! She was clearly going through it. But good thing she was relying not only on her family and friends but mental health professionals to process this all, as well. So important! Reactions? Share them (below).
