Travis Kelce is having a TOUGH time after losing the Super Bowl — but he’s not letting these emotions sway his retirement decision.
In a new episode of New Heights on Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end opened up about his future in the NFL, sharing:
“I know everybody wants to know whether or not I’m playing next year, and right now I’m just kicking everything down the road. I’m kicking every can I can down the road, and I’m not making any crazy decisions.”
That’s probably smart!

Whether or not he chooses to return next season, he has so much respect for his teammates and coaches on the Chiefs. This is why he’s being so careful about his decision, he explained:
“But right now the biggest thing is just being there for my teammates and being there for my coaches, understanding that there’s a lot that goes into this thing. I’ve been fortunate over the past five, six years—I’ve played more football than anybody. And it’s because the people that are in that building.”
That said, it’s clear he could be ready to hang up his jersey — not because he doesn’t love playing anymore, but because it’s taking a huge toll on his body and life:
“The fact that we keep going to those AFC Championships, to Super Bowls, that means I’m playing an extra three games more than everybody else in the entire league. And that’s a lot of wear and tear on your body. And that’s a lot of time spent in the building, focusing on your craft, focusing on the task at hand and every challenge that you set up for yourself. And that process can be grueling.”
Getting super candid, the Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? host continued:
“It can make you better or it can drive you crazy. And right now it’s one of those things where it was kind of driving me crazy this year. And I think it happens when you start to tail off towards the back nine of your career.”
Oof.
He noted that he’s facing the “tough reality” of realizing that success might look different than it used to, though it’s a “tough pill to swallow.” The 35-year-old shared:
“So I’m gonna take some time to figure it out. I think I owe it to my teammates that if I do come back, that it’s gonna be something that it’s a wholehearted decision, that I’m not half-assing it. That I’m fully here with them, and I think I could play. It’s just whether or not I’m motivated or it’s the best decision for me as a man, as a human, as a person, to take on all that responsibility.”
This isn’t sounding so hopeful… but there’s one thing that gives us a little hope. Elsewhere in the episode, Travis opened up about the blowout loss against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, calling it a “hard reality.” He reflected:
“Just wasn’t our day. Couldn’t find a lick of momentum. I’m kicking myself for some of the tiny, tiny decisions I made on the field.”
Gosh, that’s gotta be hard! Getting choked up, he went on:
“I love my teammates, I love my coaches. Chiefs Kingdom, I’m sorry for how it ended. I have a beautiful life man. I wish I had made better decisions early on to help my guy Pat[rick Mahomes] out and help my team find that momentum and that confidence. But you know, I just have to tip my hat to the Eagles.”
Maybe all this overanalyzing about how he played will make him eager to get out on the field again for some redemption? Anything is possible at this point. While he didn’t name Taylor Swift directly, he did reference his family and friends who supported him during the difficult loss, saying:
“I have loved ones, I have the most amazing family in the world that supports me in everything I do and they were all there, cheering me on and hoping for the best on Sunday.”
We’re sure it was a tough night for all of them! It was a brutal loss, especially this close to a possible retirement. Everyone wants to go out on a win — but it seems uncertain if Travis will get that chance at this point.
