As you probably heard, several figure skaters were aboard the American Airlines plane that crashed in Washington DC on Wednesday evening.
It turns out one of them posted a photo from inside the aircraft.
US figure skater Spencer Lane took to his Instagram Story on Wednesday to share a snapshot of the view from outside his window of the plane, which was still sitting on the tarmac at the Wichita Airport in Kansas before taking off. It was en route to the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, DC. The 16-year-old athlete simply captioned the pic accordingly: “ICT -> DCA,” which are the codes for both airports. Oof.

It’s clear this was just supposed to be a totally routine, uneventful flight. Nothing to even worry about. It all happened so fast, Spencer and the others wouldn’t even have thought to try to send profound final messages we guess. Feels pretty harrowing to see how casual it all looked now…
In another post on his feed, he also opened up about the exciting week he’d just had, expressing:
“NDC!! I am so happy to have qualified for national development camp earlier in november, it has been my goal almost ever since I became aware that it was a thing. I learned so much new information that i can apply to my everyday life, and met so many amazing people!”
He continued:
“Thank you so much @team.genia.vadim , @annehgoldbergbaldwin , and @skatingclubbos for supporting me in achieving my goal, and always pushing me to be the best i can be. Thank you @usfigureskating and the local organizing committee for making everything happen, and lastly, huge thank you to all the amazing friends, coaches, and faculty that i have met over the last week, it was such an amazing experience.”

According to reports, 64 people were on the plane, and 3 soldiers were on the US Army Black Hawk helicopter when they collided. Both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River at around 9 p.m. local time. There are no survivors.
US Figure Skating already confirmed that several ice skating community members were onboard the flight coming home from the National Development Camp in the city, which took place after the 2025 Prevagen US Figure Skating Championships. Two Russian champion skaters were also reportedly on the flight.
Heartbreaking. May Spencer and everyone who has died in this tragedy rest in peace.
