Liam Payne may have stayed behind in Argentina a lot longer than initially intended, but for his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, it had long been time to go.
Late last week — just a few days before the One Direction legend’s tragic death after falling from the fourth story balcony of a hotel room in Buenos Aires — his girlfriend abruptly got on a plane and flew back to Miami. And now, looking back at Cassidy’s TikTok video of her decision to leave the South American city, we are starting to piece together more about the days that led up to Liam’s fateful and awful demise.

As we reported, it is now clear that there were two unidentified women in Liam’s hotel room at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires along with him in the hours right before his passing. But neither of those women was his girlfriend, the 25-year-old TikTok influencer. Instead, she was back home in Miami. And we’ve got the receipts to prove it.
In a TikTok video that she posted back on Monday, Kate shows various clips of herself getting ready to leave Argentina and fly back to Miami. The clips then cycle through the airport, the long airplane ride, and her return to South Florida two days before she published it — on October 12. Over the footage, she says at one point:
“I was so ready to leave. Honestly, love South America but I hate staying in one place for too long. And we were supposed to be there for, like, five days, and it turned into two weeks.”
Five days turned into two weeks?! But why?? She doesn’t mention the reason, but she did say this as far as her motivation to return to America:
“I was just like, ‘I need to go home.’”
Interestingly, she admitted that “anxiety” amidst all the travel forced her neck to break out into a “weird rash.” But she eventually touched down in Florida without any further setbacks, and concluded:
“I was so happy to be home. It was so relieving.”

Tragically, just four days after Kate abruptly returned home to Miami, and two days after she posted the videos of herself getting back to familiar ground in Florida, Liam was dead. It’s still unclear what led to the couple being in Argentina for so much longer than Kate had planned, as she alluded to in her TikTok. And we still don’t know why she felt the “need to go home” so urgently right before she departed. Did something happen?!
Either way, the tragedy is terribly heartbreaking no matter the context. Ugh. Sending Kate and all the rest of Liam’s friends, family members, and fans all the love and light in the world right now, even though we know that it won’t possibly be enough.
