Wizards Of Waverly Place Creator CONFIRMS Selena Gomez’s Character Was Queer - But Says Disney Prevented Them From Exploring!

Alex Russo was hiding a lot more than being a wizard.

Over ten years after the fan favorite Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place concluded in 2012, fans are still hungry for any new details they can get their hands on — and show creator Peter Murrieta is delivering.

While appearing on the Wizards of Waverly Pod Monday, the creative mind behind the series revealed some inneresting news regarding the show’s lead, who was famously played by Selena Gomez. After years of speculation, Murrieta confirmed to hosts David DeLuise and Jennifer Stone, who played Jerry Russo and Harper Finkle respectively, that Alex was a member of the LGBTQIA+ community!

You may remember during season three, Alex met rebellious, bleached bad girl — and fellow wizard — Stevie Nichols while in detention, and quickly befriended her as they both loved getting into mischief. However, one story arc that didn’t quite make the cut would have apparently explored a deeper kind of relationship between the two… Murrieta explained:

“I wished we could have played more with what was quite obvious to a lot of us; the relationship between Stevie and Alex. But we weren’t able to in that time. It was pretty clear to all of us what that relationship was. That would have been fun.”

Imagine that! Looking back, the two characters did have a whole lot of chemistry, so we can definitely picture it. Take a look at one of their first interactions (below):

Stevie, who was played by Hayley Kiyoko, left the show after only a four-episode story, which concluded with her being frozen in stone after hatching a plot to overthrow the wizard power distributor, who is in charge of taking wizards’ powers. Murrieta added of her implied queer relationship with Alex:

“At that time it wasn’t a thing, but we got as close as we could. It was pretty much right there.”

He did, however, praise the Mouse House for eventually going on to portray queer relationships in future shows.

Jennifer then thanked the creative for “coming on the show,” before David added, “Thank you for making Wizards what it was.” Murrieta responded by praising the crew’s closeness during production, adding:

“That time is very special to me.”

So sweet! It seems like everyone who was a part of the show has such fond memories of what a great environment they all cultivated. Makes us want to go back and re-watch! We’d definitely have something to look out for between Alex and Stevie!
