Are You Hot Enough To Work For American Apparel?

Skeazebag/American Apparel CEO Dov Charney is up to his piggy antics again: this time, he's reportedly laying off employees who he deems damaging to the "AA aesthetic." In other words, ugly people.
American Apparel's "aesthetic" is essentially retro-amateur porn, but with shiny spandex in place of boobs and bush.
According to an American Apparel employee, each week the company holds worldwide conference calls for store managers to discuss sales, displays, etc.
Recently, however, the calls took a less professional turn when Charney "went on a huge tirade and made stores that weren't doing so well send in group photos," so that he could judge who needed to be fired and who was sexy enough to stay on. The employee goes on to say that his comments about the employee's appearances were "childish," and "insulting." There is fear among the managers that if they don't adhere to his rules, they, too, will be fired.
Yikes!
This is gross, but not surprising. Charney's no stranger to controversy, and with his pervy ways, he kind of invites it. The American Apparel frontman has been the subject of multiple sexual harrassment lawsuits and allegations from both employees and acquaintances, and openly acknowledges that he encourages employees to be sexy, will freely sleep with employees, and he even loves sluts!

yeah that's gross, a couple of years back , i got rejected to be a manager at Abercrombie & Fitch and told me i couldn't be a manager, i had also gained the freshmen 15, few weeks later they called me on christmas and told me, they had been looking for me and found me on a facebook link i left them (after I lost weight) to come in and work right then and there. and wear all abercrombie. asshole companies can burn in hell

How fascinating, my comment simply will not post. Could it be that it's ok to talk about Abercrombie or another retailer, but any direct attacks (not even an attack actually, just a statement of fact) on a certain company that actually has ads on your site is unacceptable?
Not surprised…I remember trying to apply at a store and they asked to take a polaroid of me. I asked why and they said it's part of the hiring process. That's when I told them to fuck off!

Uhm, whenever you apply to work at American Apparel, they require you to send in a picture. It's pathetic. The managers AT the actual stores have nothing to do with who gets hired. Or at least that's how it is here.
I wasn't hired there. They liked my resume, but when I went to take the polaroid headshot required for each new employee, the mood changed. I obviously was taken out of consideration because I wasn't nearly "sexy" enough….gross.

calm down. I work for american apparel and this is information is totally dramatized. Yeah Dov might have some downfalls but the way he does business and the idea behind american apparel is genius. Why does everything cost so much? Because its fucking made in the US and the people who sew the clothes actually make money. How many other companies do that? I would much rather pay more for clothes I know were made fairly than buy some shit at forever 21 made god knows where by someone who gets paid 5c an hour. He has an image for his clothes, a direction for his company and no, it is not all based on looks. He is not firing people because they aren't "hot". That is complete bullshit.

as a former aa employee, i can guarantee this dude is for real! when he visitis stores, he takes pictures of the employees (as though it would enhance the employee's/store's performance). when hired, alot of the sales associates are told to just look cute. not to mention, submitting a picture is mandatory for the application process. AND, the clothing is of poor quality, so anything Dov says about high quality craftsmanship is pure bs.
I applied at American Apparel and they make you submit photos of yourself along with your application. The aesthetics they are looking for are really stringent- they want really young skinny looking girls with scene hair, but not TOO creative, and they don't like piercings or colorful hair. Basically they don't want anyone who is able to express themselves creatively, they want little dolls to wear their overpriced hipster uniforms.

OK, so this guy is making up for his huge insecurities by only hiring "good looking" people, so he also will be seen this way–but then again, on the other hand–maybe they'll have some big sales because they're not doing so well, and I can swoop in and buy all their great t's for cheappooo!~!!
Unfortunately this is rampant in that business and it has been going on for years.
The only thing that will stop it is enacting laws through lawsuits aimed at each offense. Presently (and going back at least 30 years) there is NO MORAL OR ETHICAL CODE in the garment/fashion industry. Basically EVERYONE is soulless and have their priorities REALLY SCREWED UP.

my roommate has been a manager there for 3 years and was asked to resign last week because dov called and asked for pictures of all the staff and said some really nasty things about the people who had worked at the store since it's opening 3 years ago. she was asked to resign because in her picture she "looked hungover". she hasnt had a drop of alcohol in her life. apparently he is freaking out because the stores are not doing as well in this recession and seems to think it has something to do with the appearance of the people working in the stores. he has also introduced a drastically different dress code.
looking for a way to stay in business, perv?? how about you stop charging eight times what one should pay for a poorly made racer back tank top, striped tube sock or any other piece of cotton transitioning from scarf to skirt and back again. dov is is a disaster.

Someone should really do something. I heard they were hiring over a year ago and e-mailed Antonella somebody, the person in charge of hiring in Miami. Well I filled out an application, sent in the required three pictures, and nothing became of it. Then I went on an interview, and I was way overqualified for a simple sales position. They took two pictures… one head, one body, and that was it. I never heard anything from them but the line to interview in person was out the door of their store on Lincoln road… yet still every month or so I receive an email from Antonella about how they're hiring in their Miami stores and having "open calls" in the Lincoln road store. There isn't any shortage of people wanting to work there, they are just so incredibly selective about who they hire (and clearly it has nothing to do with qualifications, as I have had tons of experience above and beyond sales in the fashion industry). Ouch, guess I'm not attractive, according to Antonella and her American Apparel assholes.
