ASPCA Lends A Hand To AL Tornado Victims

Some good news for Alabama!

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) in Alabama has purchased a new emergency transport rig for tornado relief efforts as a result of a $128,000 grant provided by the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

The new emergency transport vehicle will greatly improve the organization’s ability to provide assistance to the affected areas of Alabama, especially parts of Tuscaloosa, which was ravaged in late April by the worst tornado outbreak in the nation’s history.

The rig will include space for animal transport cages, an on-board veterinary work space, and room for the storage of pet care supplies.

"The recent tornadoes in Alabama have created an immense need for the care of animals that have been displaced and abandoned,” said Jodi Lytle Buckman, senior director of community initiatives for the ASPCA.

“Requests for transfers and supplies have been steadily increasing since the outbreak of dangerous weather, and we are pleased to be able to offer aid to local organizations like the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.”

Hundreds Of Puppies Displaced By Alabama's Tornado

Heartbreaking.

Hundreds of animals were separated from their owners in the tornadoes that swept through Alabama that killed more than 300 people.

Hundreds more most perished as the multiple twisters cut a deadly path through several Southern states.

Hundreds of animals have ended up at the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter. Many of them are puppies separated from both their mother and owner.

The shelter's assistant director, said: "These dogs are so stressed out, many of them are scared and they just don't want to come up to the front of the cage. They're just as traumatized as the humans."

She said she has found the days since the storms struck to be especially emotional.

She has been heartened, however, by the mounds of supplies that have been donated and the volunteers who come to give their time.

Now, 300 Birds Found Dead In Alabama!

More dead birds have been found in yet ANOTHER state.

300 black birds speckled the white snow along an Alabama highway this week.

At this rate, we're starting to accept mass birds falling from the sky as a normal daily occurrence, but at least they seem to be dropping in fewer numbers as the weeks go on.

A wildlife expert thinks that the ruffled and scattered feathers around the creepy scene suggest some kind of physical trauma, like a tractor trailer hitting the flock, may be responsible.

Finally! An explanation that kinda, sorta makes sense, but then again, why are 300 birds flying low enough to get hit by traffic?

It seems to us (but we're not scientists) that these birds were already on their way to the ground before they got hit.

Check out the video above for all the details and give us your thoughts on this mystery!

Oil Spill Aftermath

birds covered in oil from gulf oil spill

There has been a recent estimation concerning the animal deaths from the BP oil spill.

According to Restore the Gulf, the official federal government's website dealing with this situation there have been 6,104 dead birds, 609 dead sea turtles and 100 dead mammals, including dolphins.

These numbers include the 5 states: Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.

These numbers do come from only an initial field-level evaluation and all of these deaths may not have been due to the oil.

After the animals are found, Amore thorough examinations are done, such as a search for oil in the throat, mouth and eyes to rule if the spill was to blame.

Experts collected 535 living sea turtles, 456 of which were visibly oiled. Only two out of nine live mammals collected were visibly oiled. The birds did not do so good, 2,079 have been collected alive, every single one of them visibly oiled.

Alabama Humane Society Will Be Forced To Euthanize Its Animals Due To Lack Of Funding

Filed under: Icky Icky PooSad SadPetsAnimal Rights

Absolutely devastating.

An Alabama humane society will be forced to euthanize all of the animals it's holding when the facility is forced to shut down on September 30th due to lack of funding.

Although the Chattahoochee Humane Society attempted to get more money by going to court earlier in the month, they were denied.

Alabama law insures that every county must have an animal shelter, but it does not specify what kind. While animal shelters only have to hold an animal for seven days before putting them down, the humane society kept all until they were adopted.

Sharon Hawkins, President of the Board of Directors, explains:

"We tried to present to them what it costs to do that and apparently our county feels that they can do it more affordably. The difference in a pound is that they hold the animal for 7 days and they do not offer the option for adoption — so inevitably they're euthanized."

Humane Society Director Shon Sims continues:

"I've tried really hard to make sure the animals that leave our facility are healthy animals and that our cleaning structure and disease protocol changed so we didn't have the disease presence we used too."

We truly wish them all of the best to hear this completely crushes us.

If you live in the area, PLEASE CLICK HERE to adopt one of the animals at the Chattahoochee Humane Society before it's too late.
