Kayaker Gets DANGEROUSLY Close To Humpback Whale!

Whales are beautiful creatures and it's amazing to see them up close.

But how close is TOO close??

We think we'd draw the line at having a humpback rise up from under you, nearly lifting your kayak out of the water!

Yeah, that sounds a bit too close.

Berthold Hinrichs was out kayaking back on January 10th near Senja, Norway.

He was floating among orcas and humpback whales and it must've been so beautiful… until one got a little too close for comfort!

He said:

"They were hunting herring and they are very careful not to harm you … one humpback came up just beside me … [then] I was completely on the back of him."

Wow! That must've been terrifying!

We'd be afraid of being swallowed whole!

Check out the video (above) to see how close his whale encounter really was!

Holy Carp! 515-Pound Halibut May Be World Record!

Man catches record 515-pound Halibut!!

Marco Liebenow is one lucky German!!

He was fishing with tour company Angelreisen Hamburg off the coast of Norway when he caught one heck of a fish…

A 515-pound Halibut to be exact!!

Reeling in that fish apparently felt like pulling in a submarine.

The current record for Halibut is 459-pounds… so this new fish SHATTERS the old record!

After a full 90 minutes, Liebenow and three other men were able to reel in the beast!

What's incredible is the 8.6-foot-long fish wouldn't fit on their boat! So they had to drag the fish back to harbor!

That's so crazy!

Sucks, though, that such an old, large fish had to die. We hope you eat it and use every part!!

Polar Bear Cub Pushes Giant Cruise Ship!

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueFunnyPolar Bear

The cruise ship M/S Expedition was passing through the Norwegian islands of Svalbard, halfway between Norway and the North Pole.

While floating through the ice and snow, a polar bear cub walked right up to the huge ship!

The area is populated with about 3,000 polar bears so it wasn't the rarest thing to see the little guy.

But the tourists on the ship sure were surprised when the bear walked right up to the ship, sniffed and then tried to push it!!

We guess that ship moved in on his territory and he was not too happy about it! LOLz!

He sure is a curious little guy!!

Check out the video (above) to see the cutie bear investigating a giant cruise ship.

Castration Is Key For Arctic Reindeer

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueDeerWildlife

Reindeer Castration

Reindeer in Norway are getting castrated.

But don't worry. It's a good thing!

The Arctic region is warming at double the global rate and researchers studying the indigenous Sami peoples in the Arctic say castrated male reindeer can cope with climate change more effectively, as compared to reindeer who still have a pair.

Inneresting.

Due to the Arctics varying temperatures, snow can melt and often refreeze to form thick ice over grazing pastures, but sterilized reindeer grow larger and can break through the ice easier.

Svein Mathiesen, coordinator of the University of the Arctic's Institute of Circumpolar Reindeer Husbandry said:

"To make herds more resilient in the future, we need to re-learn the traditional knowledge of castration."

What's the traditional knowledge of castration?

Sami reindeer herders typically BITE into the animal's testicles with their teeth!

Yuck! We'll pass.

This bitting technique is called "half-castration", which causes the animal to become sterile, but still produce some of the male hormone testosterone that promotes muscle growth.

Norway laws limit castration techniques to surgery with anesthetics, and no biting, so they are experimenting with a vaccine to recreate the effects of half-castration.

Castration aside, the survival of this species is important for these Arctic peeps because they rely on these creatures as their chief export as well as use them for practical uses like pulling large sleds.
