Plus-Sized Barbie Doll Image Sparks MAJOR Debate! Should Companies Make Larger Dolls??

Should a plus-size Barbie exist?? New image of bigger Barbie sparks debate!

Fostering a healthy body image is all the rage in the fashion industry these days!

For instance, major modeling agencies are now accepting models outside of their usual 5’10” - size 2 range, Tyra Banks has taken issue with the plus-size label, and models of all shapes and sizes have begun to grace high-fashion runways.

So is it time for the traditional Barbie doll to make a change as well?

With many young girls looking to Barbie’s curves and itty-bitty waist for an unhealthy source of thinspiration, many are saying yes.

A Facebook page dedicated to Plus Size Modeling recently posted a photo (above) asking followers if they would like to see bigger barbies in stores, and the response was decidedly mixed!

The responses ranged from:

"No one is naturally fat for gods sake, that's sending the message to girls that it's ok to look like this and be unhealthy.. How about we stop obsessing about being overweight and teach our children to eat healthy and get out and play…"

Tyra Banks Shuns "Plus-Size" Like Jennifer Lawrence Shuns "Fat"! Fashion Quote Of The Day!

Tyra Banks encourages all to ditch the term

"I don't like the label 'plus-size' — I call it 'fiercely real.' On Top Model, we call it 'fiercely real'. I don't want to use the term 'plus-size,' because, to me, what the hell is that? It just doesn't have a positive connotation to it. I tend to not use it."

Tyra Banks on why "plus-size" is an awkward term in the fashion industry.

Here’s a question from CoColicious reader Tracy regarding shopping in NYC for plus-size fashions:

Hi Netta P,

I'm going out to visit my dad in America at new year (New York), he has offered to take me shopping. I'm 18 and plus size, where are good places to go?

Thanks
Tracy

Our fashionista Netta P responds:

tracy! oh i'm so excited that you'll be visiting one of my favorite places in the WORLD. i recommend re/dress, monif c., lee lee's valise, the lane bryant headquarters, which is in brooklyn, the forever 21 (go down one floor and to the left when you get there) in times square, macy's has a good plus size section here, fashion to figure, marina rinaldi (expensive!), orchard corset for lingerie, daffy's sometimes has really expensive things, nordstrom rack (which is actually out on long island, the one in union square doesn't carry their plus sizes - BOO!), famous brands in astoria queens, smile for every sistah in you in brooklyn, and, of course, there's avenue and ashley stewart and old navy, strawberry and rainbow (very cheaply made, though), and bloomingdale's. *phew* i think i got them all. if you have any specific questions when you're here, you can always find me on twitter!
