Big changes are a-brewin’ in the Buffyverse!
Season nine of Joss Whedon‘s Buffy the Vampire Slayer — a franchise oft-celebrated for empowering young women — will feature a new gay male character.
Buffy and her Scooby Gang were already ahead of the equality curve when compared to most other works from fiction but writer Jane Espenson knows there’s more work to do!
After one film, seven years (and over a hundred episodes) of television, and a season and-a-half of comics, we’re only now getting a taste of an openly gay male protagonist!!
Hooray for a slightly more accurate representation of real world demographics!!
Jane explains:
“For very good reason, we’ve focused on the female empowerment part of Buffy, but I wondered, did we leave something out? What if someone in high school is looking up to Buffy as a role model, and we’re saying: You can’t be a Slayer?”
We don’t know much about the new character other than he’ll be breaking hearts all across town with his long, hard wooden tool!
Eww, not like that!
We’re talking about vampire hearts!! And the wooden stake he plans to penetrate slay them with! Because that’s how those creatures of the night are killed, sillies!
We wonder where this new season brings us!!
Too bad Larry died at the end of season three — we always hoped he’d find his soulmate!
