When Sarah Burton, the designer who took over for Alexander McQueen after his tragic death, was approached by the Palace to design Kate Middleton‘s wedding dress, she couldn’t believe it.
What an honor! And what a responsibility…
The pressure must have been daunting! And what probably made it even worse was the fact she couldn’t talk about the stress with anyone because she was locked in hardcore confidentiality agreement.
Sarah can reveal now:
I definitely considered not taking this job. I was at such a loss, he was such a huge part of my life, my every day. I could finish his sentences but I didn’t know that I could begin anything, and that terrified me.
I remember other people asking me, “Are you coming in on Friday?” And I’d say, “Oh, yeah, see you in the morning.” I’d be scheduling meetings knowing full well I wasn’t going to be there for them.
[Then], I remember standing in Westminster Abbey thinking, ‘This is unreal’. It was like a fairy tale. And all I could think was, ‘I hope I don’t trip over’. I didn’t realize the enormity of it until much nearer the wedding day. It was a magical experience.
It was so great to actually keep a secret, especially in this day and age when everyone talks about everything.
She couldn’t even tell her parents until the eve of the wedding. Of course, with such task at hand and the extreme desire for the design to be surprising and original, the legalities are completely understandable.
And we’re sure Sarah is very grateful for the whole experience now. After all, she did design one of the most talked about fashions of the year (probably the whole decade once it comes to pass).
