A new study found that in some adults, insomnia may be caused by a fear of the dark.
In an insomnia study of 93 students, almost half admitted to a fear of the dark, and it was found that they had more trouble sleeping than those who had no fear.
The researchers said:
“We never thought we would see this. We didn├óΓé¼Γäót think people would admit or acknowledge this fear. They would say it├óΓé¼Γäós for kids, or be too embarrassed.”
What the researchers did was have the students fill out an insomnia questionnaire, then they rated them and split them into groups of good sleepers and bad sleepers.
They tested each group, some in a dark room, some in a well lit room.
Then, they would randomly play a blast of loud white noise.
The poor sleepers, who were put in the dark, were more likely to be startled by the noise, while the good sleepers actually seemed to get used to the sounds and stopped being startled after a little.
So… have trouble sleeping?
Then go to a therapist and get your fear of the dark treated!
Or save your time and money and get a gun nightlight.
