Named Euryplatea nanaknihali, the new fly was discovered in Thailand.
But don’t even think about trying to see it with the naked eye; the fly is smaller than a grain of salt!
A female specimen was discovered by Thailand Inventory Group for Entomological Research, and they believe its behavior is VERY anti-ant.
Females drop their eggs in the ants body, where the babies begin feeding on the ants’ mouth muscles before making their way to their brain.
The ants become zombies, wandering aimlessly for a few weeks before the larva decapitates it and houses themselves in the ants’ head.
This is beyond gross! Poor ants…
While it is not the world’s smallest insect, it is the smallest fly.
