Sad…even insects are feeling the repercussions of this horrendous accident.
Since March 2011, Japan has been recovering from the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
Now, researchers are finding that butterflies from the heavily radiated areas are displaying mutations.
The mutations include infertility, deformed wings, dented eyes, aberrant spot patterns, malformed antennas and legs, and the inability to fight their way out of their cocoons.
Scientists also found out that the heavier the radiation, the more mutations and the longer the time since the accident, the more mutations were present as well.
The researchers believe that the damage done to the butterflies was not only physical but genetic as well.
Meaning the offspring will carry the same mutations as their parents.
