Scientists in Cleveland have discovered a way to provide prosthetics a sense of touch, which is wonderful news for amputees.

The way it works is this: scientists plant electrodes around three main nerves in the test subjects’ arm stumps and then a machine sends electrical signals between the electrodes and the prosthesis when it’s attached.
So neat!
Researchers even learned how to control the patterns and intensities of the signals which allowed test subjects to recognize the texture of cotton and even sort berries without crushing them.
While scientists have made major gains in their research, they still haven’t been able to create a prosthetic that maintains a sense of touch full time. As of now, the test subjects only get to use their high-tech limbs once or twice a month, and only inside a lab.
