Boxing Tips For The First-Time Sparrer

FitPerez reader Martin is going into the ring to spar for his first time and can’t help but be a little nervous. Looking for some tips to ease his nerves, he wrote boxing pro Alex Brenes, asking:

Hey Alex,
I’ve been training for 4 months now (3-4 days a week) and my trainer said he thinks I’m ready to spar. He plans on putting me in the ring next week. Any useful tips for someone just about to begin sparring? I’m a bit anxious!

According to Alex:

Martin, that’s the most fun part of training and in boxing sparring is the best way to measure one’s improvement.
If your trainer is good and he thinks you are ready, you are!!! Just go and practice what you have learned. You’ll figure out what you need to work on.
Being anxious is great! It will help you stay on your toes. Remember to listen to you corner, even if something doesn’t make sense to you, because they see stuff that you don’t. Have fun! Stick and move!!!
