Emily Blunt‘s career advice is not sitting well with people online!
While promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2 with co-star and brother-in-law Stanley Tucci in an interview with Betches this week, the actress was asked if she had any tips for “women who are hating their jobs right now.” She then muttered under her breath:
“Quit… no.”
Laughing, Emily then added:
“Just find something that you deeply want to do. Even if you’re earning no money, as long as you love it, you’ll be happy.”

Oh, Emily should have realized what would come next and backtracked or something…

Her comments unsurprisingly rubbed folks online the wrong way! They think the Young Victoria star gave horrible, out-of-touch advice, especially amid this current economic climate, where people are struggling to make ends meet and can’t just quit to pursue their passions without facing huge consequences! As many people pointed out, Emily, who is reportedly worth an estimated $80 million, gave such a “privileged take.” See the social media reactions (below):
“’Just find something that you deeply want to do — even if you’re earning no money…’ That can only be said by an (over)privileged person. I’m sure she did not mean it like that, but damn, does that sound entitled lol. Not everyone’s an overpaid Hollywood actor, some people can’t choose a job just because, the majority of people in the world do a job because they need the money to pay for their lifestyle…especially in these times we’re living in.”
“Emily Blunt really should know better than being this tone deaf. Can rich celebrities earning millions please stop preaching to the rest of us about how unimportant money is. It’s insulting.”
“Genuinely terrible advice in the current job market but I would love to be this delusional and out of touch with reality.”
“It’s soooooo easy for wealthy people to say this lmao”
“Tried paying my rent with happiness and my landlord wasn’t having it girl!!!”
“Excellent advice! The only flaw is that happiness doesn’t buy food or clothes, or pay the rent.”
“Saying ‘even if you’re earning no money’ in this economy is such a privileged thing to say”
“this take just honestly makes me more exhausted than i already am lol. yeah, it doesn’t work this way unfortunately lmao”
“I honestly think ‘Do what you love even if it doesn’t pay!!!’ is awful career advice. Do what pays well that you don’t hate, then have hobbies and side gigs outside of work. Stop asking for every type of personal fulfillment from your 9-5”
Yeesh! Well what do you guys expect from a movie star? Maybe just don’t take her advice if you don’t like it!
