Larry Nassar‘s controversial case may be over, but there’s still lots of “work to be done.”
Aly Raisman made this point abundantly clear as she took to Twitter on Wednesday to comment on the former doctor’s 40 to 175 years sentence for sexually abusing his (often young) patients. As you surely know, the Olympic gymnast was one of more than 150 victims who came forward to accuse Nassar of assault.

Raisman started her note by thanking her “fellow survivors” for their “courage, strength, and leadership.” Not to mention, Aly also gave a very special shoutout to Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, who allowed the many victims to address Larry directly in court.
She wrote:
“To Judge Aquilina, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your leadership, your professionalism, your compassion, and your commitment to allow each and EVERY ONE of us survivors the opportunity to share our impact statements in open court was extremely important and meaningful. As I shared in court, I wasn’t planning to speak, but thanks to the army of survivors and you, I am forever grateful that all of our voices are finally heard. Thank you for listening to us all.”
Hear! Hear! The 23-year-old also praised the fans that rallied behind her during this “excruciating ordeal,” saying their words have “meant so much” to her.
Sadly, Aly believes the drama is not yet over, as she called for a special investigation “to figure out exactly how this disaster happened.” The Final Five captain continued:
“…this story is not over, this story is bigger than Larry Nassar, or Steve Penny, or the three Board members who resigned earlier this week… Thinking otherwise is dangerous to the future generation. Today was an important victory but there is still work to be done.”

The American athlete’s words come just as Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon officially resigned from her position. The (now former) MSU president was heavily criticized for the way she mishandled the Nassar scandal. Additionally, USA Gymnastics Board Of Directors‘ Chairman Paul Parilla, Vice Chairman Jay Binder, and Treasurer Bitsy Kelley all stepped from their positions too for the part they played in all of this.
It’s said USA Gymnastics also suspended former U.S. women’s national team coach John Geddert and the U.S. Olympic Committee finally opened an investigation into the sex abuse.
Here’s hoping the organization heeds Aly’s advice in order to avoid another tragedy like this one. Smh.
