Anna Kendrick didn’t make ANY money off her latest movie because she felt “gross” about it!
If you’ve been scrolling through Netflix recently, you may have seen the Pitch Perfect star’s latest film Woman of the Hour. It’s about the Rodney Alcala serial murders in El Lay in the ‘70s, and how a young woman (played by Anna) crosses paths with him on an episode of a dating show. You can refresh your mind by ch-ch-checking out the trailer (below):
Anna not only starred in the thing, but she also directed it. So, she put a LOT of work into this project. But she didn’t end up cashing any checks for it!! The 39-year-old revealed as much during a recent episode of the Crime Junkie podcast, explaining that the whole idea of making money off a true crime story raised some “really valid ethical questions.” She explained:
“This was never a money-making venture for me because all the resources just went to actually making the movie … but it wasn’t until the week before [the Toronto Film Festival] that I thought, ‘Oh, the movie’s gonna make money’ … and I sort of asked myself the question, ‘Do you feel gross about this?’ and I did.”
So, instead of just quietly stuffing the funds in her bank account and trying not to think about it too much, she made the noble decision to donate her profits to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime! She explained:
“And so I’m not making money off of it the movie, the money is going to RAINN and to the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime.”
Wow, good for her! Putting that money to EXCELLENT use. You can hear her talk more about it (below):
