Dakota Johnson Says She's Struggled With Depression Since She Was 15

Dakota Johnson opens up about struggling with depression since she was a teenager.

Dakota Johnson is opening up about having lived with depression and anxiety since she was a teenager.

In a newly published interview with Marie Claire, the Fifty Shades of Grey star got deeply personal about her mental health struggles and how she’s managed to cope with them over the years, admitting:

“I’ve struggled with depression since I was young — since I was 15 or 14. That was when, with the help of professionals, I was like, ‘Oh, this is a thing I can fall into.'”

The 30-year-old actress went on to explain how she’s learned to accept this part of herself as she’s gotten older:

“I’ve learned to find it beautiful because I feel the world. I guess I have a lot of complexities, but they don’t pour out of me. I don’t make it anyone else’s problem.”

Johnson’s conversation with the mag was recorded back in February, just as concerns of the coronavirus pandemic began making its way across the United States. She added:

“I feel the most insane anxiety about our world and our planet. I’m constantly thinking about the state of the world right now. It keeps me up at night, all night, every night. My brain goes to crazy dark places with it.”

Sadly the world only got worse after that…

Dakota also said her brain “moves at a million miles per minute,” and it’s forced her to do some real leg work, including seeking therapy, to get it under control:

“I have to do a lot of work to purge thoughts and emotions, and I am in a lot of therapy.”

Not only are we glad to hear her getting the help she needs, we’re especially proud of her for being so transparent about it and helping to break the stigma which still exists within conversations about mental health. As more of our favorite celebs come forward with their personal stories, it just goes to show you really have no idea what someone else could be going through!

The Fifty Shades Freed star also touched on the subject during an interview with AnOther Magazine back in 2015, where she explained how her anxiety would often spiral into something much worse:

“Sometimes I panic to the point where I don’t know what I’m thinking or doing. I have a full anxiety attack. I have them all the time anyway, but with auditioning it’s bad.”

We’re glad that years later, Dakota’s found some solid methods for coping with this and we continued to wish her the best. Before you go, ch-ch-check out the insightful, full Marie Claire interview (HERE), and more of shots from her cover story shoot (below):
