The suicide of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, who killed himself after Dharun Ravi secretly filmed him having sex with another man and broadcast it over the internet, shocked the nation almost a year ago, and now, it appears that the roommate and his lawyer are now claiming that the whole thing was a big misunderstanding!
Good! What he did was WRONG!
Although Dharun Ravi, the Rutgers University student who secretly filmed roommate Tyler Clementi being intimate with another man and broadcast it over the internet – which ultimately led to his suicide last year – had attempted to assert that the entire thing was a misunderstanding, Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman has ruled that he will NOT be dismissing his 15 criminal charges, including bias and intimidation, against him.
During the hearing this morning, he announced:
“I’m finding there is testimony to support these charges.”
Thankfully, the judge also ruled that the full name and birthdate of Clementi’s lover, only known as “M.B.,” would not be given to the defense, and that despite Ravi’s lawyer Steven Altman requesting access to evidence about the suicide being deemed irrelevant – as he’s not being charged with causing the tragic event – the prosecution must provide him with the police report and the victim’s computer before he makes his final ruling on the matter, schedule for October 20th.
He elaborated:
“I recognize “M.B.” has limited knowledge about this case. I’m balancing his right to privacy with Mr. Ravi’s right to defend himself.”
Meanwhile, the other defendant in the case, Molly Wei, who has been accepted into a program for first time-offenders, and has to perform 300 hours of community service, undergo counseling and work full time, will be expected to testify against Ravi, as part of her sentence.
We are very pleased with this judge’s ruling!
What this young man did is such a gross invasion of privacy, and we expect him to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for his actions!
