no title
It looks like Empire‘s creator Lee Daniels is about to build Fox an entire… well, empire! LOLz!
On Thursday, the writer/director spoke at the Television Critics’ Association‘s summer press tour on expanding the universe of his breakout hip-hop drama!

What’s specifically in the works is a prequel series centering around a young Cookie Lyon, played in the show by Taraji P. Henson!
YES!! Daniels revealed:

“I think there’s going to be a spinoff of Empire. I have to tell story that I know. I can’t tell it unless I’ve lived it…OK, here she is now. How did she get to where she’s at right now? Let’s go back and understand her mother. Let’s go back and understand her sisters. Let’s get back and understand the makings of her. That I know, because I know Cookie.”

Wow, that sounds amazing! The strong-willed, estranged mother is definitely a fan favorite character on the show, so we could totally see a series centering around Cookie’s struggle to get to the top!

But Daniels revealed that we may have to wait a bit to know Cookie’s origin story, as he’s got his hands full with other projects.
When asked about the development stages of the prequel, he said:

“I don’t think we’re quite there yet. I have to focus on Star.”

Star is Daniel’s new pilot for Fox that follows an Atlanta based all-girl pop group’s rise to fame! And don’t worry, Empire fans, the execs at Fox are already toying with the idea of a crossover between the two shows down the line!
Empire returns to Fox for season two on September 23!
