Eric Dane’s cause of death has been revealed.
Less than two weeks after news of his death shocked fans around the world, People has learned the Grey’s Anatomy star died of respiratory failure.
As we’ve been following, the Euphoria actor had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2024. The debilitating progressive disease, which affects nerve cells, causes sufferers to lose muscle control, including their ability to speak, walk, breathe, and eat, according to the Mayo Clinic. Eric went public with his diagnosis in 2025, and in the pursuing months remained vocal about the need for additional research on the disease.

According to People, his death certificate listed ALS as an underlying cause.
The beloved actor is survived by his estranged wife Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13. Prior to his passing, Eric recorded a message about how he wished to be remembered. You can view it HERE.
