Hayden Panettiere has been through a lot… In the last year, and even just in the last week. And she’s ready to talk about it all.
Last week, all eyes fell on the Nashville alum after she sat down for an interview with People where viewers were unfortunately all too quick to judge. It was a heavy sit down where she opened up about losing custody of her daughter, her brother Jansen’s death, and more. And Hayden was clearly affected by it. But sadly, viewers were far more concerned with the condition she appeared to be in rather than what she had to say. You can read more about all that HERE.
Days later, she took to Instagram to hit back at some of the criticism, even shading People for seemingly making an effort to portray her a certain way. She claimed:
“The interview started well, and for the record, its beginning is not included in the version PEOPLE Magazine posted.”
The 35-year-old also blasted fans for criticizing “how fast or slow” she speaks, and ultimately shared an important message about mental health:
“Grief looks different on everyone. Whether or not I am on medication is none of anyone’s business and is between me and my doctor. I am doing interviews to promote my new film because I am proud of it. The real issue here is the toxicity of social media, and a news cycle that is driven by click bait. Mental health is so important, and I hope those reading this now understand that what you say hiding behind a computer screen can have a detrimental impact on someone.”
And she’s not done having that conversation!

Hayden appeared on Tuesday’s episode of TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, and opened up more about having to address her mental health in such a public way after her interview with People went viral. She told the hosts:
“I thought it would be easier. I thought that empathy would be the only thing there, but I had no idea how my body, my mind, was going to react to grief. And it’s wild what stress, and grief, and all these hormones running through your body can do. [They can] make you faint.”
She noted that grief “comes in all different forms, so nobody should be embarrassed by it or judged for it.”
Seriously!
Elsewhere in the interview, she gave an update on where she stands in her journey of processing her brother’s death. She shared:
“I don’t know that I fully have. I think it’s something that transforms over time … When you lose somebody that you saw in all of the important moments of your life standing right next to you, it just rocks your world.”
That’s so, so heartbreaking. And just goes to show that we shouldn’t be so quick to judge! Hayden did, however, gush about her trainer Marnie Alton who has helped her “in ways that [she] can’t even put into words.” She told the TV hosts:
“It’s not just about physical, it’s the mental state that you’re in. It’s when we have to step outside and have a conversation. A real true, grounded conversation. Or today’s a day for a long walk where we’re still moving, but we’re doing some venting and therapy at the same time.”
We’re so glad she has someone on her side who’s able to help her in such a major way.
