lizzie mcguire cast reunites for table read

We may not have the Lizzie McGuire revival just yet, but this is the next best thing!!

In a new 44-minute long Instagram video, Hilary Duff was joined by the cast of the original Disney series for a virtual table read of one of the most iconic episodes, Between A Rock and A Bra Place, which originally aired on May 11, 2001.

The 32-year-old reunited with castmates Jake Thomas (Matt McGuire), Hallie Todd (Jo McGuire), Robert Carradine (Sam McGuire), Adam Lamberg (Gordo), Lalaine (Miranda), Davida Williams (Claire), Ashlie Brillault (Kate), and Kyle Downs (who played Larry Tudgeman, but was reading the late David Carradine‘s lines).

Writers Nina and Jeremy Bargiel, as well as fellow former writer/Jake’s real-life dad, Bob Thomas, were also present. The Lizzie portrayer even had a small animated Lizzie by her side!!

While it wouldn’t be the same without the titular character, we actually have the fictional star’s younger brother to thank! Hilz explained the quarantine reunion was Jake’s idea, which lead into the group hilariously attempting to sing the theme song… Maybe they could have used some practice in advance?? LOLz!!

Ch-ch-check it out for yourself (below):

As you’re likely aware, a revival of the iconic series was set to be released on Disney+. However, production was halted pre-coronavirus after there were creative differences between the network and original creator Terri Minsky regarding topics they wished to explore, which were apparently deemed too grownup for Disney audiences. Duff expressed her disdain with the stalled process via Instagram:

“I am so proud of the two episodes we did. Hilary has a grasp of Lizzie McGuire at 30 that needs to be seen. It’s a wonderful thing to watch. I would love the show to exist, but ideally I would love it if it could be given that treatment of going to Hulu and doing the show that we were doing. That’s the part where I am completely in the dark. It’s important to me that this show was important to people. I felt like I wanted to do a show that was worthy of that kind of devotion.”

Disney+ also released two statements following Minsky’s departure:

“Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series. After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the series.”

“We paused production on ‘Lizzie McGuire’ a few weeks ago to allow time for some creative re-development. Our goal is to resume production and to tell an authentic story that connects to the millions who are emotionally invested in the character, and a new generation of viewers too.”

It’s unclear whether production and negotiations will resume following the COVID-19 pandemic.

We only hope!!
