Hoda Kotb is back on Today after a two-week hiatus — and she’s ready to talk about why she was out…
If you’ve been keeping up with the NBC morning news show, you’ll know the hosting team has endured a bit of a shakeup recently… If you remember, Hoda stepped off air February 17, with Craig Melvin and Sheinelle Jones revealing last Wednesday it was for “a family health matter.” A day prior to that, the 58-year-old’s co-host, Savannah Guthrie, also stepped away after testing positive for COVID on air. Now, both anchors are back, and Hoda is opening up about the scary situation that’s kept her away.

During a Monday morning broadcast, the Daytime Emmy award winner explained to Savannah that her 3-year-old daughter, Hope Catherine, had developed health complications that landed her in the intensive care unit! Hoda explained:
“My youngest, Hope, was in the ICU for a few days and then in the hospital for a little over a week. I’m so grateful she’s home, she is back home. I was waiting for that day to come, and we are watching her closely.”
How terrifying! We’re so glad she’s home and doing better now. Hoda continued:
“You know what I realized too, Savannah? It’s like, when your child is ill, the amount of gratitude you can have for people who helped you out. So, I’m grateful for the doctors at Weill Cornell who were amazing and the nurses. And I’m grateful for my family, and I’m grateful to friends like you who were there every single day. So I want to say thank you for that. I love you.”
While the mother of two didn’t share details of what exactly her daughter had been diagnosed with, she was met with an overwhelming amount of love from the Today crew. Savannah, who noted “it’s nice to have you right back where you belong,” supportively reassured her:
“I love you too. You have a lot of friends out there. We are right there with you, lifting you up and holding you. So let’s do this.”

Pretty much the scariest thing that could happen to a parent is for their child’s health to be compromised, so we are sending nothing but love and positivity to the anchor. See the full moment (below):
In addition to Hope, Hoda also shares 6-year-old Haley Joy with her ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman. In the weeks that she’s been off air, she’s been sharing uplifting quotes on Instagram. See a few (below):
Now we know what that’s about, too! We’re so glad Hoda’s daughter is doing okay AND that she’s back on air! Share your support for her in the comments down below.
