They say three’s a crowd… but not for these three!

HGTV just took a big step in highlighting relationship diversity with a throuple being featured in the latest episode of House Hunters. Meet Brian, Lori, and Geli.

At the start of Wednesday’s episode — titled “Three’s Not A Crowd In Colorado Springs” — Lori explained:

“A throuple is three people in a relationship.”

Together, the trio were looking for a home to fit their polyamorous needs, including being able to accommodate Brian and Lori’s children. The two were married in 2002, and have a 10-year-old and 12-year-old together. Brian told the cameras:

“I understood from day one, even when we were dating, that Lori was bisexual, and interested in women and men. And so, we evolved to a point where we were comfortable having another woman in our lives.”

After meeting Geli in a bar, they fell in love. They entered into a committed relationship in a ceremony attended by their kids in Aruba. Geli shared:

“I didn’t plan on being in a relationship with a married couple, but it just happened very naturally, organically.”

Together, the family decided to move somewhere new with great views, and landed on Colorado Springs. Geli expressed (below) her hopes for the new home bringing a fresh start for the family unit:

“The past four years, I’ve been living in Lori and Brian’s house, so buying a house together, as a throuple, will signify, like, our next big step as a family of five rather than all four of them plus me.”

Their list of must-haves for the new home included a master bathroom for three, a three-car garage, and roomy kitchen. Lori stated while touring one home:

“This is a couple’s kitchen, not a throuple’s kitchen.”

Though the network definitely garnered a lot of praise online for their diverse choice, some on Twitter were not so thrilled:

HGTV just had show featuring a “throuple.” Normalizing polyamory on a family channel.

Cultural dumpster fire #2 I’ve stumbled across this morning. I apparently need to avoid news and media today.

“Wow @hgtv, I can’t believe you aired an episode of #HouseHunters with a “throuple”. I’ve been watching your channel and House Hunters every night for years and this made me change the channel. I’m disgusted you decided to air this and I won’t be watching HGTV again”

Per E! News, the network said in a statement:

“We feature all homebuyers and living choices.”
