Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster kept their relationship private for months, maybe even years. Maybe the secret wasn’t kept very well among Broadway behind-the-scenes folks, from what we hear. But the Music Man co-stars tried nonetheless. However, on Monday night they finally got snapped by the paps, confirming the coupling.
Darn, right? Ambushed by a photographer who happened to be in the neighborhood, right?
Well…
From the start we got the feeling these pics were about as staged as 76 Trombones. We mean, they look like they’re filming an ED medication commercial! Well, on Thursday we finally got some more evidence that has us totally convinced.

DeuxMoi revealed on Thursday’s Deux U podcast, she revealed a celeb sighting tip she received Monday evening:
“Hugh Jackman and Sutton foster were just spotted walking hand-in-hand on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. They were dressed up for something special. There was a paparazzi photographer on the street. As soon as they saw the photographer, they turned around.”
This message is wild for many reasons. First off, it gives us a more specific location for their date. We previously just heard it was in Santa Monica. Now look, Santa Monica generally isn’t as dense a neighborhood for celeb hot spots where the paps hang out. That’s more in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. But there are a couple places. However, these pics were taken on Montana Avenue. That’s nowhere near anywhere a paparazzi would hang out — unless they knew a celeb was going to be walking by. In fact, a listener who lives in the area responded to her that they’ve literally “never” seen a paparazzo there.
Add that to the fact the pics are too perfect? Aided in part by the fact, as mentioned, Hugh and Sutton are dressed casual but real nice casual?
As if that weren’t enough, Deux got this message on Monday evening. And the photos went up… on Monday evening. The gossip hound says it was LESS THAN AN HOUR later, People had them up. This is our business. We may be talking out our butts when it comes to lawsuits or politics, but we know something about turnaround on celeb gossip.
You’re telling us in less than an hour, this shutterbug reached out to their contacts, they made a deal to publish the pics, and People wrote up a brief article? On a Monday night for a mostly 9-5 outfit? Sorry. The only way this makes sense to us is if the deal was in place beforehand. Someone at People knew they were getting Hugh and Sutton pics. It’s the only explanation.
So yeah. Staged.
But why would Hugh and Sutton do that? It’s not like they need to boost their profile or anything. No, we think this is a soft launch. Or previews, in the Broadway parlance.
See, there’s already enough bad blood brewing with Hugh and his ex Deborra-Lee Furness, who has made all too clear she believes he cheated on her with his musical co-star. If he posted some cutesy snuggles on the ‘gram? She’d be furious!

However, if the paparazzi snapped them while they were casually getting some fro-yo in Santa Monica? Hey, it’s not his fault, right? But it does make the relationship more public, something we’re betting he AND Sutton are ready for. Now that the seal is broken, now that photos are out there, hey, no point in NOT walking red carpets together, going IG official, etc. Right? The soft launch.
