The legendary actress and Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis is opening up in the latest issue of People about her opioid addiction, getting sober, and the impact of her addiction on her life:

“I was ahead of the curve of the opiate epidemic. I had a 10-year run, stealing, conniving. No one knew. No one.”

She opened up about being introduced to prescription opiates in 1989 after a minor surgery, and spent the next 10 years hunting painkillers however she could, including stealing pills from friends and family:

“I’m breaking the cycle that has basically destroyed the lives of generations in my family. Getting sober remains my single greatest accomplishment… bigger than my husband, bigger than both of my children and bigger than any work, success, failure. Anything.”

Unfortunately, Jamie Lee isn’t the only one in her family to have suffered from addiction. Her father Tony Curtis abused drugs and alcohol, and her half-brother Nicholas Curtis died from a heroin overdose in 1994.
Thankfully, she was able to break this cycle of addiction and has been sober for nearly 20 years, and regularly attends meetings to help those still struggling.
So brave to open up about this dark period, thank you!
