Jason Derulo Seems To Throw Shade At Shawn Mendes' Performance Skills! Really, Dude?

Shade over a t-shirt? Yes, ladies and gents, that seems to be the case here.

Jason Derulo recently did an interview with UK’s Official Charts and appeared to shade Shawn Mendes in one quote where he took some digs at the state of today’s performers at award shows. Here’s the quote in question:

“Performing is such a lost art. I come from a different school. When I watch these award shows and I see a dude comes out in a white t-shirt, I’m like, s**t, that’s terrible man, this is what the music industry is. And that s**t happens over and over again. How is that okay? How are we okay with our award shows looking like this? I love the total package, so you know, you kind of feel a little slighted.”

Many interpreted the quote as shade against Shawn because he was wearing a white tank during his performance of Senorita with Camila Cabello at the 2019 MTV VMAs, and that was the most recent award show that Jason would’ve watched. It all adds up!

Jason also seemed to take offense at the fact that not enough of today’s performers dance during their performances, as is evidenced in his quote praising Normani at the same award show:

“Man, it’s so refreshing. So refreshing. [Normani’s performance is] a clear example of the difference. And people’s reaction to is like, ‘What is this? Someone is singing and dancing? I don’t understand?!’”

Okay, first of all, HUH?! Lots of performers still sing AND dance (case in point: Beyoncé for one, even Taylor Swift lately) and just because not every musician dances doesn’t mean performing is “a lost art” as Jason put it. Some have different performance styles and that is FINE.

Secondly, Shawn does not always perform in a simple white t-shirt or tank. Exhibit A:

Moreover, he looked fine and polished as hell on the VMAs red carpet in a Dolce & Gabbana suit, Saint Laurent shoes, and David Yurman jewelry.

Shawn also plays guitar while he performs, and that’s nothing to overlook. He’s talented AF. But maybe we’re reading too much into Jason’s quote and there was no shade? The Cats star may’ve been thinking of Ed Sheeran, who has been known to perform in just a t-shirt too and once looked rather unkempt standing next to Beyoncé.
