How To Beat Cravings

Despite your level of fitness, EVERYONE gets cravings for food we know we shouldn’t be eating.

FitPerez reader Elisha knows this feeling all too well and wrote to celebrity trainer Jennifer Cohen for advice on stopping it, asking:

Hiya Jen!

I’m very active, I play on a club soccer team and am constantly working out and excercising on my own. I have problems with cravings, and I know that if I didn’t eat when I get cravings, that I would feel better about myself. I feel like I have a few pounds which are holding me back, and I don’t find excercising as a problem. Any tips on how to stop cravings?

According to Jennifer:

Next time you have a craving, look at the clock. Studies show that a craving will go away in 20 minutes. To pass the time, drink herbal tea – it satiates the cravings, takes awhile to drink while hot, and fills you up as much as a glass of water. Chewing sugar free mint gum can help as well, but NOT bubble gum – the sugar can actually trigger cravings for sweets. Brushing your teeth helps curb nighttime snack cravings. You’re much less likely to eat something (and have it taste good) right after you’ve brushed your teeth
