The only scars Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker has are emotional.
On Sunday, director Todd Phillips shared a first look at the star of his upcoming, yet-to-be titled Joker origin film that follows the character’s transformation into the Batman villain we know and love.

Captioning the image with just “Arthur,” likely the name of this Joker before he takes on the deadly moniker, the pic revealed that this iteration is unlike any Joker you’ve seen before: he’s completely bare faced!
That’s right. No makeup and no scars… for now, at least. Phillips said the film is an “exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”
Sounds inneresting. Ch-ch-check out the first look image (below).
So very gritty! He’s certainly not your father’s joker — or your older brother’s or probably yours, either. But different is good, right?
Don’t worry, Jared Leto’s Joker fans. (We know there are at least a few of you out there.) Warner Bros. has said that Phillips’ Joker film will have no effect on its DC Universe, where Leto’s version of the character will continue to wreak havoc.
WB is also developing a standalone Joker film that will star Leto. Meanwhile, Phoenix’s grittier Joker movie is set to hit theaters Oct. 4, 2019.
