Apparently, there was almost a world where John Stamos didn’t portray Uncle Jesse on Full House!
The sitcom’s creator Jeff Franklin sat down with Dave Coulier to discuss the pilot during the first episode of the actor’s new podcast show, Full House Rewind. And they dropped some bombshells for fans of the beloved series! During their chat at one point, Dave and Jeff recalled the first cast table read. The 63-year-old star said:
“I remembered our first table read.”
Jeff chimed in, adding:
“Where there’s a room full of studio and network executives. They were all there to see Stamos, I think.

Although the higher-ups may have been there to watch John, their attention was quickly on Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner, when she began reading her lines. As Dave said:
“Jodie just stole the show.”
The 68-year-old producer agreed Jodie “stole the whole thing” – much to the chagrin of John! According to Dave, when they left the table read, John had become very concerned that Jodie would take the spotlight:
“And I remember walking out with John. He’s like, ‘The whole show is going to be her. We can’t do this!’”
In fact, the 59-year-old Glee alum was ready to quit the whole show after being upstaged by the former child star! Seriously? He was that jealous of a 5-year-old?! Jeff shared that he found out “much later” that John “was so upset about having to play second fiddle to these really funny kids, that he went out and called his agent and said, ‘This is a mistake. Get me off this show.’” Yikes… In the words of Stephanie, how rude!
Obviously, someone talked him out of leaving the project or he moved past his ego! Because John went on to play Jesse Katsopolis for the whole eight season run of the series between 1987 to 1995. He starred alongside Dave, Jodie, Mary-Kate Olsen, Ashley Olsen, Candace Cameron Bure, Andrea Barber, Lori Loughlin, and the late Bob Saget. John later reprised his role for the reboot series, Fuller House, between 2016 and 2020. There’s no doubt his time on Full House cemented him as a huge TV star. So clearly, it wasn’t a mistake as he first thought!
