Who killed JonBenét Ramsey? No one has been able to solve that mystery ever since her body was found in the basement of the Ramsey family home in Boulder, Colorado on December 26, 1996.
There have been plenty of theories about who did it over the years. For a long time, the 6-year-old pageant queen’s parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, and her then-9-year-old brother Burke were suspects, especially in the eyes of the public. Even though DNA testing on material discovered under JonBenét’s fingernails and in her clothes showed her mom and dad were not a match, they remained at the center of the investigation because a detective did not give those results to the prosecutors for months. All of their names were not cleared until 2008 — two years after JonBenét’s mother died of ovarian cancer.

Convicted pedophile Gary Oliva and former teacher John Mark Karr, who falsely confessed to killing her in 2006, were also on the list of suspects at one point. Sadly, police still have yet to crack this case. But did the director of the new Netflix documentary, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey just figure it out for them??
Filmmaker Joe Berlinger still thinks the Ramsey family is “innocent” — and not only that, but he has a theory about who may have murdered JonBenét! Whoa!
For those who don’t know, Berlinger is an acclaimed early true crime documentarian. He directed 1996’s Paradise Lost, which put the spotlight on the case of the wrongly convicted “West Memphis 3” — who were ultimately freed from prison in no small part because of his careful work. So, this guy knows how to do some research in the true crime realm! And in his eyes, no one in the Ramsey family could have murdered JonBenét. Instead, on Friday, he told The New York Post:
“I am firmly convinced that the Ramsey family is innocent. And I am also firmly convinced that this case can be solved, if the Boulder Police Department finally does what it’s supposed to do.”
As you may know, the Boulder Police Department has not been cooperating with John, so much so the dad has resorted to publicly begging them to do their jobs. This includes allowing the retesting of the evidence! Awful! Given how desperate John is to solve the case, even participating in the documentary for no pay, Berlinger just cannot imagine he, or anyone in the family, killed JonBenét:
“John Ramsey agreed to sit down with us, did not ask to be paid, and was not paid — we don’t pay our subjects — and asked for no editorial input. No questions were off limits. To me, that is an 80-year-old guy who…wants to get that case solved. It’s just unthinkable that the family had anything to do with this.”
That said, Berlinger believes many “likely suspects” were ruled out too soon back then due to faulty DNA analysis. So, they should all be reevaluated — including the Ramsey family:
“I think all suspects now have to be put back on the table, including the Ramseys. And they would be the first ones to say, ‘Sure, put this back on the table, but let’s do the DNA testing.’ This is not trial by television. I don’t want to do to people what was done to the Ramseys. We want the proper authorities to reinvestigate this case, and the potential suspects after the DNA is properly retested.”
However, the authorities in Boulder seem unwilling to get that done. Berlinger hopes the documentary will help push them to do the DNA testing:
“There still seems to be this institutional lack of will to ultimately solve the case, because of what I believe was extreme mishandling at the outset. I don’t think there’s been a good comprehensive documentary series that has really analyzed this case that will also hopefully put a little pressure on the authorities to do the right thing.”
Fingers crossed! It’s about damn time to find the killer and close this case for good. John, now 80, deserves to get some justice after all these years.
So, also, there’s all this talk from Berlinger about who didn’t do the crime. But what about who did it? Who does he believe killed JonBenét? He revealed to The Post:
“Sadly, there are a lot of people in the world who are attracted to little girls, and can do horrible things to them. [An intruder] is a much more plausible scenario than the family having been involved, if you look at some of the basic facts in the case.”
John also suspects it could have been an intruder, even thinking that the person who previously broke into the home of a 12-year-old girl living two miles from their house and raped her was JonBenét’s killer. That young girl attended the same dance studio as JonBenét, too! However, despite those glaring coincidences, the police “blew it off.”
Will they do the same now that Berlinger, who has a good track record in this area, has brought up the intruder theory? Or will his comments and the documentary put enough pressure on investigators to retest the DNA and look into the idea? We’ll see…
What are your thoughts, Perezcious readers? Do you agree with the intruder theory? Sound off (below).
