Kelly Clarkson Reveals Living Through 'Overwhelming' Depression & Grieving After Difficult Divorce

Kelly Clarkson made it through 2023 with many high highs — and many more low lows.

Of course, she spent much of the year fighting through the aftermath of her contentious divorce from now-ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. And seeing all that unravel in the public eye has the American Idol alum ready to get real and talk all about it in her new cover story interview with People that’s set to hit newsstands on Friday.

In their chat, the Texan opened up about how writing her latest album Chemistry proved to be a pretty cathartic experience as she navigated her split from Blackstock, who was also her former manager. Speaking about writing this latest album — her tenth studio effort in all — she said:

“I didn’t see it other than: This is my outlet. I’m a let-go person; I don’t hold grudges. So it was really delving into what happened in my life and why — and what am I going to do about it?”

Going on, she revealed that the album allowed her to work through some pretty significant feelings of grief and depression that, for a while, left her overwhelmed. Kelly explained:

“I cannot express how appreciative I feel for having that kind of healthy outlet. Because the level of depression and things that come with divorce or grieving is extraordinarily hard. You feel alone, and it’s just a blessing to be able to have that outlet for those emotions that are overwhelming.”

And now that the album has been released (it went out for purchase and streaming back in late June), sending it out into the world allowed her to let go of all the pent-up despair she’d been feeling:

“It [was] like, ‘I’m taking my power back.’ That sounds very therapy, but that’s because I love therapy, and I think it’s important to have those tools to navigate your life and relationships.”

More recently, her two children — daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remington Alexander, 7 — joined her on stage at her Vegas residency. That was back in August, but Kelly is still thinking about tit:

“They were a little nervous, but it was their idea, not mine. … It caught me completely off guard, and it was the most magical moment because they were so happy and at ease. They were just in awe.”

Awww!

Ultimately, the Wayfair ambassador is grateful for the fact that life has turned the page and there is a bright and unknown future ahead for her:

“Sometimes you don’t know what life has in store for you, and you think your life is going to go one way, and it’s OK that it doesn’t. You never know how beautiful that might be.”

Love that. She’s definitely not wrong there! What do U make of her optimistic attitude after the very difficult slow-motion divorce she just went through, Perezcious readers? Sound OFF with your thoughts down in the comments (below)…
