Meryl Streep wasn’t always a fan of Goldie Hawn, all because of her annoying on-set habit!
As you may know, the two starred in the cult classic Death Becomes Her. The dark comedy follows the feud between Madeline, played by Meryl, and her former friend Helen, played by Goldie, as they fight over their surgeon love interest Ernest, portrayed by Bruce Willis. And it turns out there may have been a rift between the two leading ladies IRL! But not over a man! Instead, Meryl took issue with Goldie’s tardiness!

While reminiscing on her iconic roles with Vanity Fair on Thursday, the 76-year-old actress opened up about her time on the 1992 movie. And just like their characters, she apparently had some tension with her co-star! Meryl admitted she “had a beef” with Goldie because she was never on time for filming — and got away with it:
“Goldie, she was always late to set. And I’m always on time, you know, and annoying. But she was so adorable. She had a red convertible, I remember, and she’d drive herself to set. So that was probably the problem. She’d drive herself to set. She had her hair all … ‘Oh gosh, sorry!’ And everybody thought, ‘Oh, she’s so cute.’ Yeah. So I had a beef with her.”
Tardy Hawn!
No, they never came to blows like Helen and Madeline in the movie! In fact, despite her beef with Goldie’s lateness, Meryl fondly looks back on their time together on set. Calling it “silly and fabulous,” she said:
“We just laughed. We just had a lot of fun. And she’s the best laugher in America, really. She laughs like, ‘Ahahaha!’ And then they have to stop shooting. But that part was fun.”
And to make it clear, Meryl’s beef with Goldie isn’t that serious! The Devil Wears Prada 2 star went on to gush over how much she “loved” The First Wives Club alum and considers her “one of my buddies.” She added:
“Over the years, we’ve had some laughs about that movie because people love it. I thought it was like a documentary on Beverly Hills.”
Meryl also feels the same way about Bruce! She loved her time with him, too! She expressed:
“Oh, Bruce was divine. I guess he was a bad boy on certain sets, and came with a little reputation for being difficult, but we had so much fun with him. He was such a gent, and so game, and willing to be ridiculous. I just thought he was wonderful.”
